Volvo Fuel Pressure Signal Too High ECM 2600

Vehicle: 2005 Volvo S40.

Symptoms: Check engine light illumination, otherwise there are no other symptoms. Vehicle drives and runs fines with no hiccups or misfires. Check engine light comes back a day or two after clearing trouble codes but in some cases is inconsistent, can stay off for a week or more and then come back again.

No other issues with vehicle apart from fault code EMC- 2600, Fuel pressure sensor, Signal too high. Trouble codes can also manifest as P0193 or P0088.

As with all trouble codes first reaction will be to replace fuel sensor or PEM module (fuel pump module) which is a known issue due to a bad location right in front of rear wheel and exposed to elements. And that is what was done in this case, Fuel Sensor and PEM were replaced. That did not fix this issue. Check engine light came back within a week with same ECM 2600 Fuel Pressure Sensor, Signal Too High trouble code.

Solution: Replace Engine Oil Cap. That was the problem in this case and can affect all Volvo models…and other cars for that matter. As time passes engine oil cap gasket gets dry due to engine heat/cold cycles and introduces unmeasured air into manifold causing all kinds of erratic problems with fuel trims.

Before you start replacing fuel sensors and control modules when chasing down a fuel trim issue on a Volvo or fuel sensor high signal trouble code start with engine oil cap. Oil cap is cheap and needs to be eliminated as a cause first before continuing diagnostics.
