Tools: 10mm socket and ratchet or 10mm wrench, Spark plug 16mm socket and extension, flat screwdriver and pliers. Grease or anti-seize compound.

Remove engine cover, its held in place with two 10mm bolts on sides and a push in type rubber bushing in the center. Remove 10mm and pull on engine cover to remove it. Clean up the place around ignition coils, you dont want dirt or other stuff going inside cylinders when you remove spark plugs.

Now you have access to engine ignition coils. Start by unplugging ignition coil electrical connections. Press on connector safety tab while simultaneously pulling on ignition coil connector. If ignition coil electrical connectors are seized, use a flat screwdriver between ignition coil connector and ignition coil body as a lever. Careful as ignition coil connectors are fragile.

After removing all ignition coil electrical connectors start to remove ignition coil bolts. Remove 10mm bolts and pull ignition coils out. Pull straight up to remove ignition coils, you can twist a bit if coils are hard to come off.

Use 16mm spark plug socket and ratchet to remove spark plugs. Spark plug replacement should be done with a cold engine, its easier. When engine is hot, engine head which is aluminum will expand more than spark plug body which is metal, tightening spark plugs. Therefore, spark plugs will be harder to remove on a hot engine, plus you dont want to burn yourself.

Remove all four spark plugs, check condition of spark to make sure they look the same and nothing out of ordinary. Use a light and look inside spark plugs holes. If you see any oil there, then you will have to change valve cover gasket and spark plug o-ring gaskets.

Oil on spark plugs will cause all kind of troubles, misfires and deterioration of ignition coil rubber boots.

Spark Installation Removal Mitsubishi Outlander

Spark plugs are gaped from factory and do not need to be gaped. However, you might want to take a look and check spark plug electrodes gap look the same. Just to make sure there are no production or shipping damages. Do not drop spark plugs, if you drop one on the ground by accident, inspect it to see if anything happened to electrodes and there are no cracks on porcelain body.

When installing new spark plugs, do not use a ratchet or force. Initially, spark plugs should be installed by hand only, ratchet should be used only to tighten spark plugs after plugs are threaded by hand on engine head. If you use a ratchet and spark plug does not go in straight, aluminum engine head threads might be destroyed. If that happens, prepare to spend some serious money to fix it.

Apply grease or anti-seize compound on spark plug threads. Use extension and spark plug socket to install spark plugs (no ratchet). Insert a spark plug on 16mm spark plug socket and thread spark plug all the way in, as much as you can by hand.

Repeat same procedure with other spark plugs. Spark plugs should go in easily. If one doesn’t go in easily, do not force it. Use another spark plug or try spark plug on another spark plug hole.

After all spark plugs are threaded by hand, use ratchet to tighten them. Do not over-tighten, spark plugs have a crush washer gasket. You will feel it when spark plug gasket is crushed, usually it takes half a turn or so to fully tighten spark plugs after hand installation.

Install ignition coils. Line up ignition coils on spark plug openings and press them in. Install ignition coil 10mm bolts. Plug in ignition coil electrical connectors, press them in until you hear connector click.

Start your car and leave it running for a minute or so to check everything is operating normally. Install engine cover, press in rubber bushing and install engine cover 10mm bolts.
