Mercedes Benz Sunroof Rattle Repair
Vehicle: 2014 ML 350.
Symptoms: Mercedes Benz Sunroof Rattle when driving on unpaved roads. Distinct rattle and or knocking inside cabin while going over bumps, can easily be mistaken with suspension failure such as stabilizer links or strut mounts. Rattle or noise is permanent and doesn’t seem to be affected by weather or other factors.
Problem: Knocking sound or rattle comes from sunroof, noise bounces of the car and is sometimes hard to pinpoint. To pinpoint if noise is coming from sunroof: drive on a bumpy road and keep your hand on sunroof glass to feel any knocking or rattle.
Repair: Tighten Sunroof Screws. Removing entire headliner is a time consuming ordeal but there is a way to go around it. First remove all four (front and rear) handles above doors.

To remove handles use a flat screwdriver to remove handle clip covers then squeeze handle metal clips while pulling on handle, will come our easily. Metal clips will remain in place, remove them too by squeezing on sides, can be done by hand otherwise use nose pliers.
Next step, pull on headline to unclip it. Pull on the sides headliner until is lowered until thee is enough space to fit your hand. (Note: Do not pull too much, head liner can be pulled down only about 10-20 cm or so).
With headliner down you should be ale to see and reach sunroof Torx screws. Screws are located on centre bar separating front and rear sunroofs and on left and right side bar, 7 screws all together.
Use a small ratchet to tighten all screws, which are 2 different sizes. There is not much space to work with but there is enough to reach all of them. Screws will not be completely lose, probably need about 1/4 to 3/4 of a turn to be fully tight and eliminate the noise. Also while there, check sunroof rails and other components, just to make sure nothing else is lose.
Test drive the car and see if rattle is still there, if not reinstall headliner. Push headliner in place first and then reinstall handles.
