Volvo S40 Grinding Noise On Right Turns Problem
Vehicle: 2003 – 2012 Volvo S40.
Symptoms: Grinding noise when turning right at slow speeds and occasionally clunking noise when driving straight under power. No noise or symptoms when turning left or on high speeds. Symptoms are very similar to a failing CV joint, almost identical and very easy to make a mistake and replace a CV joint which will Not fix the problem.
Problem: Upper right engine mount failure, passenger side. As engine mount rubber deteriorates or breaks completely will start to vibrate and cause shuddering on right turns at low speeds, and sometimes a clunking noise when vehicle is under load at slow to medium speed (ie, when accelerator pedal is pressed).
Solution: Replace top right engine mount (passenger side, located close to coolant reservoir).
Tools: 15 and 17 mm socket/ratchet and extension, Torx 25 for splash shield removal and a Jack to lift engine. Time for replacement is about 30 min to one hour. Engine mount can be purchased on amazon for about $50.
Replacement: Engine mount is located on top right side of engine (passenger side), beside coolant bottle. Start by removing coolant reservoir, there are no screws or bolts, just pull straight up and will come out. Place it on top of the engine out of the way.
Remove splash shield underneath the car, Torx 25 screws. Place jack underneath oil pan and raise the engine. Do not raise too far, jut enough to release load from engine mount.
Remove 15mm mount bolts on vehicle frame and remove U-shaped piece, its an engine mount limiter.
Next, remove two 17mm engine mount bolts on engine and remove engine mount. If it doesn’t come out easily you will need to raise engine a little bit more until is engine mount is free.
Install new engine mount in place and tighten 17mm bolts then install U-shaped limiter and tighten 15 mm bolts on frame. Place coolant bottle back in place, remove jack and install splash shield.
Take your car for a test drive, should be smooth again.
