Hyundai Accent Purge Valve Problem P0496

Hyundai Accent and Elantra Evaporation Purge Valve Removal and Replacement: Trouble code P0496 on Hyundai Accent or Elantra indicates failure of Evaporation Purge valve. Failure of Purge valve will also illuminate check engine light (code P0496) but you will not feel any difference in vehicle operation, car will run fine.

Vehicle shown is a 2010 Hyundai Accent. However, procedure is the same for Hyundai Elantra too.

Problem is related to evaporation system and is an easy fix. It should take about an hour at most to remove and replace Hyundai Purge valve.

Evaporation purge valve cost about $30 and can easily be purchased to Amazon on any automotive parts store.

Purge valve is located behind intake manifold close to engine firewall (image below, red arrow). Valve is not accessible unless air intake duck is removed.

Hyundai Purge Valve Removal And Installation

Remove intake air duct. Release clamp on intake hose by unscrewing 10 mm bolt (image below, red arrow). Do not remove bolt completely, just loosen it.

Next, use a pair of pliers to remove vacuum hose clamp (image below, blue arrow). Pres both clamp lips and pull clamp backwards. Pull vacuum line to out of intake hose.

Air Filter box. Release four locks on air filter housing cover, just push them out of place. Pull air intake hose out of air intake fitting, might need to pull a bit hard to loosen it and remove whole air intake assembly (intake hose and air filter housing together).

Purge valve is circled in red on image above. Valve is held in place only by a rubber mount, it has no bolts or screws.

First, notice valve orientation, make a photo if needed to make sure to not install purge valve backwards.

Start by disconnecting purge valve vacuum line, the one which is accessible for the moment, Use a pair of pliers to close clamp lips and pull it backwards. If vacuum line is seized use a screwdriver as a wedge to separate it from purge valve body.

Next, unplug purge valve electrical connector, press on locking tab and unplug it.

Hyundai Accent Evaporation Purge Valve Removal

Once vacuum line and electrical connector are removed, pull purge valve to release it from rubber mount. Just hold the valve and pull it towards yourself, it might take some force to come out.

Rear vacuum line is not accessible at this position. You will need to flip valve above intake manifold, rear vacuum line is long enough (image below).

Unplug intake manifold sensor (image below, blue arrow), press on lock tab and remove sensor electrical connector. Then flip valve upwards above intake manifold to gain access to vacuum line.

Disconnect rear vacuum line valve and remove purge valve. Remove rubber mount from old valve and install it on the new one. Make sure to notice orientation, do no install purge valve backwards.

Installation is reversal of removal. Install rear vacuum line first, push valve on its rubber mount, connect purge valve electrical connector, install front vacuum line. Connect intake manifold sensor electrical connector and install air intake hose.

Clear trouble code using a Obd2 scanner or just remove negative battery cable for few minutes. Drive the car for a day or so, if check engine light doesn’t come back then all good to go.
