Volkswagen Evaporation Leak Detection Pump Code P2420

Volkswagen Evaporation Leak Detection Pump (Trouble Code P2420 and P2401) failure is a common issue on Volkswagen. Error associated with it, P2420 is specific to evaporation leak pump failure.

Volkswagen Evaporation Leak Detection Pump Code P2420

Leak detection pump is not expensive (about $120 or so), replacing takes some time but otherwise little efforts and few tools. Before you head to your nearest dealer might as well take a chance replacing yourself and save a few bucks.

Pump is located behind wheel well liner on right rear side of your used car (passenger side). Tire will have to be removed to make room for removing wheel cover lining (picture below).

Tools: Torx set, flat screwdriver, 10mm socket and ratchet.

Lift your used car and support it on jack stands. Do not work on vehicle supported only by own vehicle jack. Have parking brake engaged. Remove rear passenger side tire.

Remove wheel cover liner Torx screws. You don’t need to completely remove wheel liner, remove rear and bottom screws then flip liner forward. Pump will be at the top of wheel well (picture below).

Remove inner rubber hose by pulling on it, a flat screwdriver will help to wedge it out. Unplug electrical connection; press on side clip of connector to unplug it (picture below).

Removal of Jetta Evaporation Detection Pump

Remove three 10mm bolts and take evaporation pump out. Pump has to be removed from housing bracket. Bracket will be reused to install new pump.

Unplug plastic hose, press both sides simultaneously and pull on front hose outwards to disconnect it. Might be seized, go easy on it as it doesn’t take much to break it.

There are three Torx screws holding pump to bracket, remove screws and separate evaporation pump from housing bracket.

Volkswagen Evaporation Leak Detection Pump Trouble Code P2420 and P2401 Installation: Install new pump to bracket. Line up pump on bracket and install screws, clip plastic hose to new pump.

Place pump back under wheel arch, install rubber hose and three 10mm bolts. Plug electrical connection and close wheel well lining. Install tire.
