Ontario Vehicle Plate Renewal

Ontario removed sticker and renewal license plates fees as of March 2022.

Removal of sticker and sticker fees does not mean you don’t have to renew your plates. Ontario license plate of vehicles under 3,000kg will still need renewal every one or two years. Failure to renew your car plates every year or two years, will result in fines up to $1,000.

From Service Ontario Government website:

(When you renew:

  • you will no longer receive a sticker
  • you do not have to pay license plate renewal fees 
  • law enforcement will be instantly aware your license plate was renewed

Ontario vehicle plates can be renewed at Ministry of transportation location or online.

To renew your license plate you need to have information such as: plate number, vehicle permit number, insurance policy and company name, odometer readings of your car.

Ontario license plate renewals can also be done easily online at Ministry Of transportation website: Vehicle Plate renewal.

Emission test or Drive clean program for passenger vehicles was cancelled in 2019 and not required for license plate renewals.

If you have any outstanding fines in Ontario, you will need to pay them prior to renewing your plates. You have to pay fines in full or you will not be allowed to renew your plates. Other outstanding fees or unpaid tolls need also be paid prior to license plate renewal.

Police officers could see expiration date of your car plates on plate sticker and fine you if plates were expired. Now, with stickers removed there is no way to visually tell if a vehicle plate is expired or not.

Ontario has been investing in ALPR system. ALPR stand for Automatic License Plate Recognition and will enforce license plate renewal in Ontario. ALPR is an automatic system which allows a police cruiser to scan plates around them and identifying expired plates. Police will then proceed to issue fines.
