How to Replace Ignition Coil Pack on Volkswagen Jetta

How to diagnose and replace ignition coil pack on Volkswagen Jetta: 2013 Volkswagen Jetta, 2.0 liter 4 cylinder engine. Procedure for ignition coil replacement is identical for all 2.0L VW Jetta and Golf engines which use ignition coil pack and ignition wires instead of separate ignition coils.

Ignition coil pack failure will cause engine misfire on multiple cylinders. Flashing or blinking check engine light will also be triggered to warn driver of misfires and to pull over. Do not drive your car with flashing check engine light as you might damage your engine.

Usually symptoms of a failed VW Jetta ignition coil pack include: Misfires, shuddering on idle and acceleration, jerking or vibration, sputtering, bad fuel efficiency, backfires and check engine light.

Trouble code associated with ignition coil pack failure is P0351 (Ignition coil primary/secondary circuit). Ignition coil pack on VW Jetta is very easy to replace with few tools and doesn’t cost much, about $60 or so.

You might want to replace spark plugs and ignition wires while at it, as a full tune up. Ignition wires cost around $80 and spark plugs $15 each depending on type and brand.

Tools

You will need a ratchet and extension, Torx T30 bit, flat screwdriver.

Ignition coil is located in front of the engine, on right side of intake manifold (image above). Coil is very easily accessible, you dont have to remove anything else to reach it. Ignition coil pack can be purchased at any auto parts store or online (amazon has them for $60 give or take).

Engine should be cold when you are working on it, you don’t want to burn yourself. Start by unplugging ignition coil pack electrical connector which is located at bottom of coil pack. Use a flat screwdriver to push on securing tab while pulling on connector.

Nest, remove ignition coil pack wires. Before doing this, you should take a couple pictures and notice which wire goes to which cylinder, will come handy when you install new ignition coil pack. Pull on ignition coil wires and remove all four of them.

Ignition coil is secured in place with three Torx T30 bolts. However, in some engines Volkswagen decided to use 10 mm bolts, you will need a 10 mm socket if that’s the case.

Use ratchet, extension and T30 bit to remove ignition coil pack bolts. Once bolts are removed pull ignition coil pack out of place.

Ignition Coil Pack Installation

Position new ignition coil in place and install bolts. Do not over tighten ignition ignition coil pack bolts, just tight enough. Connect ignition coil pack electrical connector, just push it in place until your hear it click.

Install ignition coil pack wires. Image below has ignition coil wires numbered 1 to 4 with each number corresponding to a cylinder.

Number one cylinder being the first one when counting from left to right. So, cylinder number one is the first cylinder on left side of engine when looking at it frontally (or passenger side).

Make sure ignition wires are inserted fully and are secured on ignition coil pack. After finishing, start the car and leave it running for a minute to make sure everything is Ok. Clear Obd2 codes and your done.
