How to change spark plugs 2017 Honda Civic: 4 Cylinder 1.5L Turbo engine. Procedure to replace spark plugs is identical for 2016 and newer models.

Honda Civic Spark Plug Type: OEM spark plugs are NGK Iridium ILZKAR8H8S. Iridium spark plugs have a lifespan of roughly 150k km. Tools

14mm spark plug socket and a 10mm socket, extension, ratchet and flat screwdriver. Grease or anti seize compound.

2017 Honda Civic Spark Plug Removal

Turn vehicle off and open hood. Its best to replace spark plugs on a cold engine, to avoid getting burned. Honda didn’t bother to put an engine cover, so you can start straight to removing coils.

There is no need to remove battery, but if you want to be in the safe side just remove negative terminal cable.

Step 1: Disconnect Ignition Coil Electrical Connectors

Ignition coil connectors are secured by a locking tab located on center rear of connector body. Press tab down and pull ignition coil connector out of place (image below).

Repeat procedure on other ignition coils and remove connectors from all four coils.

Step 2: Remove Ignition Coils

Ignition coils are held in place by 10mm bolts. Use 10mm socket and ratchet to remove ignition coil bolts and pull coils out of engine head opening. If coils are hard to remove, twist them around until they come out of place.

Take a look inside spark plugs holes. If you see any oil present inside spark plug holes then you need to change engine cover gasket and spark plug O ring gaskets.

Step 3: Remove Spark Plugs 2016 Honda Civic

Use 14mm spark plug socket, extension and ratchet to remove spark plugs by rotating Counterclockwise. Continue and repeat procedure on all spark plugs are removes.

Make sure not to drop any debris or dirt or anything else for that matter inside spark plug holes.

Installing New Spark Plugs Honda Civic

Step 1: Prepare New Spark Plugs

New spark plugs are gaped from factory, you do not need to gap them again, just make sure not to drop them. Apply grease or anti seize compound on spark plug threads.This will make installation easier and will prevent spark plugs from seizing on engine head.

Step 2: Install New Spark Plugs

You should initially install new spark plugs by hand, using socket and extension only. Do Not use ratchet. Spark plugs should easily by hand, if spark plugs does not go in easily try another spark plug. Do Not force spark plugs by using force or ratchet.

Install all spark plugs by hand until finger tight, using only extension and spark plug socket. Repeat on all four cylinders. After, use ratchet to fully tighten them, starting from left to right, jut to make sure you dont mix them up and forget one lose.

Do not over tighten spark plugs, just tight enough. Spark plugs have a crush washer seal, you will be able to feel washer crushing when you tight them. Correct torque for tightening spark plugs is about 14 lb-ft.

Step 3: Install Ignition Coils

Ignition coils are all the same, doesn’t matter which one goes where. Install ignition coils bu aligning them on spark plug holes and press them in. Install and tighten ignition coil 10mm bolts. Plug in ignition coil electrical connectors, just press them in until your her then click.

Start the car to make sure everything is running properly, or take it for a short drive.
