Toyota ABS Activation at Low Speed Problem
Vehicle is a 2010 Toyota Camry, 4 Cylinder with 2.5L engine and 130,000 km. Vehicle is not modified in any way and is stock.
Toyota Abs Activation at Slow Speed Symptoms
ABS activates intermittently at low speed or when coming to a stop. Abs self activation in this case is not constant but intermittent, does not happen all the time but only under certain conditions. OBD2 scanner shows there are no OBD2 codes stored, and all 4 Abs sensors read normal when fault is not present.
Where to Look: Assuming there is no problem with ABS control module (very rare occurrence) there are only few things remaining that can cause this problem. First is Tone Ring which is located close to Abs sensor, second is failure of ABS sensor itself. However, there is something else which can cause this problem as it is in our case here: Rust.
Toyota Camry Abs Self Activation Diagnosis
Tone ring was checked and proved in good condition, teeth all accounted for and clean. Abs sensor also checked out fine with no problems. In this case, live data shows Abs self activation on low speed is triggered by right front abs sensor.
Problem: As we said problem here is Rust. As time passes wheel hub will rust, especially on places were salt is used in winter. Rust will push Abs sensor upwards increasing distance between abs sensor and tone ring teeth. This will cause Abs sensor to lose contact with tone ring under certain conditions and activate Abs. There will be no OBD2 trouble codes stored as vehicle computer assumes everything is running as it should, even when Abs sensor signal is false.
Solution: Very simple, clean wheel hub where Abs sensor is located from rust. Remove Abs sensors (inspect tone ring teeth while at it), start with front two sensors as those have a higher chance of being the culprit.
Clean rust using sand paper or a steel brush until Abs sensor sits flat on surface. Install Abs sensors and try it, if problem persist remove rear Abs sensors and do the same. Make sure to use a piece of paper to block Abs opening before you clean it to prevent debris from going into tone ring teeth.
Do not use a grinder or other power tools to clean wheel hub. You only need to remove surface rust, a wire brush or sand paper will do the job fine.
