Safety Certification Requirements Ontario: In 2016 Ontario introduced new safety regulation standard and requirements passenger and light duty vehicles. Inspection will be extended to things not covered previously. ECS (Electronic Stability Control), Air Bags, Power train and Abs will be added to the list.

Safety certification can be acquired from certified mechanic if your car passes inspection on minimum safety standards.

Vehicle Safety Certification Requirements

1. Windshield cracks

Previous rules covered only cracks on driver’s side wiper area. Under new Ontario safety regulations total area of front windshield, (drivers and passenger) should be clear of cracks.

2. Tinted Windows

Tinted windows will be added to requirements of safety certification inspection for all vehicles manufactured starting January 2017. Front windows are not permitted with darker tinting as outlined by regulations.

3. Warning lights

Warning lights are now part of Ontario safety inspection on a used car. Air bags, Odometer, Speedometer, ABS, Traction Control and other important systems must all be operative.

4. Oil Leaks

Leaks are now part of safety certification inspection in Ontario. Oil leaks need to be repaired under new rules. Oil leaks are generally expensive repairs.

Tire treads: Tire tread depth will have to be minimum 2mm anywhere on tire surface at time of inspection.
